Why is being “black” suddenly so popular now?

That is a valid question.

Since we elected Barak Obama our new President, it has brought being black back to popular status (or has it?).  Sure it is great that people are having a renewed interest in black culture, but take it from me,  I thought that being black was popular a long time ago. We had people like Martin Luther King, Thurgood Marshall, Jesse Jackson, Malcolm X, and others to remind us that being black is special.  I can only read about what it was like during segregation and the whole civil rights movement, but there were those of us who were actually living in those times.   Being 43 now I was raised during the 70’s and 80’s.  I thought that being black was something to be proud of.  I knew that when I got older, while walking through the mall, I noticed little old ladies veering away clutching their purses.  Then came the 90’s and being “gangsta” was the hip thing to do.

Now it seems that the color of our skin is back in popularity with the new administration.  How long will it last though?  With the recession  growing and the government shuffling its feet with the proposed stimulus package, how long will being black be popular?
